Alexander Mueller is currently the study leader of the project on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity Agriculture and Food, which is hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme. He is also a member of the German Council for Sustainable Development. From 2006 to 2013, he served as Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He headed the Department for Natural Resources and the Environment, which works on issues like land and water, climate change, genetic resources for food and agriculture, and international agricultural research. In this position, he was also the chair of UN Water and UN Energy for a number of years.
